These days, if you step out early in the morning or late in the afternoon, chances are you’ll see people pedaling away—some on sleek road bikes built for speed and smooth tarmac, others bouncing along on sturdy mountain bikes, tackling dirt trails, forest paths, and countryside roads. Now, road bikers love their speed. Mountain bikers? We live for the adventure. So I’m not trying to spark a civil war here, but after riding both styles on their home turf, I’ve come to a slightly controversial conclusion: mountain biking is better. And here’s why. First, it’s safer. Yep, I said it. Compared to road bikes, mountain bikes are built like tanks—with stronger frames and disc brakes that actually make you feel like stopping is an option. And where are you riding them? Not on the highway, that’s for sure. You’re cruising through forests, climbing hills, skimming across rice fields—not dodging scooters, cars, trucks, and eighteen-wheelers speeding past you with only inches to spare. But on the road? One second of distraction and boom—game over, lights out, thanks for playing. Second, mountain biking is healthier. Why? One word: air. Road biking often means sharing the road with engines spewing exhaust and stirring up dust. Day in, day out, that stuff goes into your lungs. Not great. Mountain biking, on the other hand, gives you fresh, clean countryside air. Trees. Birds. Nature. Your lungs will thank you. Plus, studies have shown mountain biking gives your cardiovascular system a better workout. So yes, it’s good for your heart—emotionally and physically. Third, mountain biking is just… more fun. A road bike gives you one option: paved roads. Flat, smooth, predictable. Sure, you might catch a good view or two, but a mountain bike? That’s a passport to adventure. You can ride anywhere—up hills, down trails, across streams, through villages, forests, fields. Every ride is different. Every turn could lead to something new. If you’re into photography, mountain biking will serve up scenes that make you want to slam the brakes just to snap a shot. Now, if you’re lucky enough to own both a road bike and a mountain bike—congrats! You can switch it up whenever you like. If you’ve only got a road bike, maybe it’s time to start eyeing a mountain bike, just to spice things up. And if you’re a mountain bike owner who’s been riding the same city routes over and over—come on now, set that bike free! Let it roam where it was meant to: trails, hills, wilderness. And for those who are shopping for their first serious bike and can only afford one? Go for the mountain bike. Trust me. At the end of the day, it’s not really about which bike is better. Road bikers chase speed, mountain bikers chase discovery—but we all share the same love for two wheels and the open road (or trail). So whatever you ride, may your tires stay full, your brakes stay strong, and your passion stay burning with every kilometer you ride. Mr. Old Man
