The Diocese of Da Nang consists of five deaneries: Da Nang, Hoa Vang, Hoi An, Tra Kieu, and Tam Ky, with a total of 51 parish churches. While waiting for the post-Covid period to explore the churches of Quang Nam, I took the opportunity to cycle around and visit all the churches within Da Nang, including 30 parish churches and 2 sub-parish churches. I have already written six articles introducing these churches. However, it would be a significant omission not to dedicate a special piece to the Da Nang Cathedral.

Da Nang Cathedral (officially named the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart of Jesus) is the seat of the Diocese of Da Nang. It is located at 156 Tran Phu Street, Hai Chau District, Da Nang City. This church is one of the few remaining structures built during the French colonial period.

Designed and constructed under the direction of Father Vallet, construction began in February 1923 and was completed after 13 months. The church was consecrated and inaugurated on March 10, 1924.

The cathedral showcases Gothic architecture, with soaring lines and elegant details. Its lozenge-shaped arched windows reflect the characteristic design of European churches. Inside, religious paintings and statues illustrate biblical events in the Western church style, creating a solemn and majestic space. Atop the cross stands a gray rooster-shaped weather vane, serving both as a symbolic mascot and a lightning rod, as well as a wind direction indicator. Due to this distinctive feature, aside from its official name, locals affectionately refer to it as the “Rooster Church.”

As the largest church in Da Nang, the cathedral has become a popular check-in spot for visitors, especially Catholic tourists. Those who visit on weekends can witness and even take part in the solemn religious ceremonies held here.

When I visited the Da Nang Cathedral, I felt a quiet reverence — not only for its historical and architectural beauty, but also for the enduring sense of faith and community it represents. Of all the churches in Da Nang I have visited, this one is the most impressive.
