— A Bicycle, a Field, and a Moment in Time —

A Chance Encounter

Exactly ten years ago, I pedaled into Truong Dinh Hamlet and stumbled upon a group of kids playing tag on a rice field, freshly cleared after harvest.

Curious Eyes and a Light Bike

When they saw a stranger stop his bicycle by the roadside, their curiosity pulled them in. One kid lifted the bike and gasped, “Wow, this bike is super light!”

Another gave it a try and asked, “This must be an expensive bike, right, uncle?”

“Not too pricey,” I replied with a smile. “Just a few hundred thousand dong.”

The smallest boy absolutely didn’t believe it. He shook his head confidently, “No way. This bike looks too nice—it must be over a million.”

A Village by the River

Truong Dinh is a village that, from above, looks like a small, beautiful peninsula tucked beside the Cu De River. Though only about 15 kilometers from downtown Da Nang, it feels gently removed from the noise of the world.

Here, people raise brackish-water shrimp, farm fish, grow rice, and tend melon patches.

The day I passed through, herds of buffalo and cattle grazed peacefully on the golden stubble of freshly harvested fields.

Time Moves On

Those kids must be all grown up by now. Some may be in university. Some may already be earning a living.

But that playful afternoon in Truong Dinh, with laughter echoing across the fields, still lingers like sunlight in memory.
