QUESTION
Dear Mr. Old Man,
L/C requires: Insurance policy/certificate in assignable form and endorsed in blank…
Insurance certificate is presented in Original and Duplicate of which the Original is duly endorsed and the Duplicate is not endorsed.
Can I raise the discrepancy “Duplicate not endorsed”?
Thank you.

ANSWER
Hi,
If based on the doctrine of strict compliance, there appears to be a discrepancy. However, a checker with common sense will not raise such a discrepancy because the fact that a duplicate insurance certificate is not endorsed does not disable the beneficiary’s right to claim under an original insurance certificate duly endorsed. Moreover, according to insurance industry, where an insurance certificate is issued in more than one original, one is accomplished upon which the others shall stand null and void.
Best regards,
Mr. Old Man
