Amsterdam, the capital city, truly is a cycling paradise where bikes seem to dominate the streets. In Amsterdam, you’ll see cyclists enjoying absolute freedom — relaxed, carefree, and in many cases, with a kind of priority that makes you feel like bikes rule the road. It feels like Vietnam during its “bicycle era.” Couples on dates, where the girls sit side-saddle on the back of their boyfriends’ bikes, look so charming and romantic — a beautiful sight to behold. You’ll also notice: • Almost no one wears a helmet, not even kids. • Bicycles with two or even three seats — enough for an entire family. • People doing all sorts of things while biking: holding umbrellas, eating sandwiches, smoking, listening to music, chatting on the phone… LAST BUT NOT LEAST Vietnam once was a bicycle nation — at least in the North. Bicycles were part of history, from the legendary “bicycle army” in the Điện Biên Phủ campaign to the everyday scenes of people biking to school, work, or to make a living. There were even love stories deeply tied to the age of bicycles.
