Nestled in the heart of Quang Nam province, Chien Dan Towers stand as a majestic symbol of the ancient Champa Kingdom. Located in Chien Dan Village, Tam An Commune, Tam Ky City, these towers are not only historical landmarks but also captivating sites for culture and architecture enthusiasts.

A Journey Back to the Champa Era

Built between the late 10th and early 11th centuries, during the reign of King Yan PuKu Vijaya, the Chien Dan complex marks an important era when the Champa capital was transitioning from Quang Nam to Binh Dinh. The towers showcase the sophistication of Cham architecture and are considered a bridge between the My Son A1 and Binh Dinh artistic styles.

Architectural Harmony in Stone

The Chien Dan complex includes three shrines, aligned north to south, all facing east. Each tower is a square structure with tiered roofs and features graceful archways adorned with elegant patterns. The walls are decorated with pilasters and finely carved sandstone cornices.

  • The Southern tower is the largest and oldest.
  • The Central tower follows in size and sequence.
  • The Northern tower is the smallest and most recent.

Despite their similarities in form and style, each tower has its own character, collectively offering a harmonious yet diverse architectural ensemble.

Unearthing Hidden Treasures

During an excavation in 1989, archaeologists discovered intricate stone foundations and hundreds of sandstone artifacts with exceptional artistic value. Among the most remarkable finds were:

  • The sacred Yoni–Linga altar
  • Statues of mythological creatures such as the Naga serpent, the Hamsa goose, the Garuda bird, and the Gajasimha elephant-lion

These relics reflect the spiritual richness and the craftsmanship of Champa artisans.
