QUESTION

Hi Sir,

Short question.

LC states “Chattogram seaport” as the place of delivery while BL presented states “Chittagong”.

Both names are the same in Bangladeshi. Chattogram = Chittagong.

Is this a discrepancy?

Best regards,

Pocholo Jose Lim

ANSWER

Hi,

Yes, Chittagong and Chattogram are the same.

It is explained that Chittagong is officially called “Chattogram” because “Chattogram” is a more accurate pronunciation of the original Bengali name. This change reflects efforts to align the city’s name with its native pronunciation and cultural roots.

Below is what I found from Ozean Brokerage & Shipping AG’s website:

QUOTE

The Bangladesh Government informed that the name of the port of Chittagong will be changed to Chattogram. As per advice from carrier PIL, both Chittagong and Chattogram spellings are allowed at the moment.

Going forward PIL Bills of Lading will indicate the POD as “Chattogram (Chittagong)” by default. Upon request by our customers, we may also indicate only one of the names, i.e. “Chattogram” or “Chittagong”. The manifest will always reflect “Chattogram (Chittagong)”.

UNQUOTE

In my opinion, there is no discrepancy.

Even when the issuing bank raises the discrepancy, it should waive the discrepancy upon receiving a clear explanation from the nominated bank.
