Articles Lifestyle Mr Old Man Cabo Verde Lost 2–3, but Won Something Even Bigger By Mr Old Man Posted on 14 minutes ago 3 min read 0 0 8 Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Share on Google+ Share on Reddit Share on Pinterest Share on Linkedin Share on Tumblr Before the 2026 FIFA World Cup, chances are that 99% of us had never even heard of Cabo Verde. It is a small island nation in the Atlantic Ocean with a population of just over half a million people. In the football world, it was almost an unknown name. But that is one of the beauties of the World Cup. In just 90 minutes, a small nation can step onto the world stage and stand shoulder to shoulder with football giants. Cabo Verde did exactly that. Photo credit: Fact Buddy They overcame many opponents to qualify for the 2026 World Cup. And when they faced Argentina in the knockout stage, they showed no sign of being overawed. They played with courage, fought until the final whistle, and eventually lost by the narrowest of margins, 2–3. They may be out of the tournament. But from today, the name Cabo Verde will no longer be unfamiliar to football fans around the world. Where Is Cabo Verde? Cabo Verde, formerly known in English as Cape Verde, is an island country in the Atlantic Ocean, about 600 kilometres west of the Cap-Vert Peninsula in Senegal. Since 2013, the government has asked the international community to use the country’s official name, Cabo Verde, in all languages instead of translating it as Cape Verde. Congratulations to Argentina for surviving a real scare and booking their place in the next round. And thank you, Cabo Verde, for introducing the world to a small nation in the middle of the Atlantic. Sometimes, the World Cup is not only about crowning champions. It is also about introducing the world to countries that many people had never heard of before. —-Mr. Old Man
