Mr Old Man Payment Q&A WHEN A BILL OF LADING MUST INDICATE ACTUAL PORT OF DISCHARGE By Mr Old Man Posted on 11 hours ago 2 min read 0 0 29 Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Share on Google+ Share on Reddit Share on Pinterest Share on Linkedin Share on Tumblr QUESTION Dear Sir, My letter of credit (LC) specifies the Port of Discharge as “BAHRAIN INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT AND/OR ANY SEAPORT OF BAHRAIN.” For a sea shipment, if we indicate the Port of Discharge as “Bahrain Seaport of Bahrain” or “Bahrain, Bahrain” on the bill of lading, would either of these be considered a discrepancy? Additionally, could you please provide the specific clause in the ISBP that explains the correct representation of the Port of Discharge in the bill of lading? Looking forward to your guidance. Best regards, C.R. Nishanth —- ANSWER Hi, As far as I know, Bahrain is a country, not a specific port. It has five main ports: Mina Salman Port, Khalifa Bin Salman Port, Al Manama Port, Sitra Port, and Al Muharraq Port. According to ISBP 821 (E10), when an LC indicates a geographical area or range of ports of discharge, a bill of lading is to indicate the ACTUAL port of discharge, which is to be within that geographical area or range of ports. In line with ISBP 821 (E10), the bill of lading must state one of the five ports mentioned above as the port of discharge. A bill of lading that simply states “Bahrain Seaport,” “Port of Bahrain,” or “Bahrain, Bahrain” as the port of discharge does not comply with ISBP requirements. Best regards, Mr. Old Man
