Mr Old Man Payment Q&A FAKE SWIFT MESSAGE SCAM By Mr Old Man Posted on November 22, 2024 4 min read 0 0 566 Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Share on Google+ Share on Reddit Share on Pinterest Share on Linkedin Share on Tumblr QUESTION Dear Mr. Old Man, Hope this email friends you well, I have been reviewing your blog but couldn’t get across the answer if an MT 999 can NOT arrive at the receiving bank. Attached you will find the copy of the swift, I think I’m getting scammed or hassled, but my receiver has not found the swift and the sender is telling me he will issue a new one cause after 48Hs the swift MT 999 expires. Please let me know your thoughts. Best regards — Saludos, Gabriel Espinosa From Ecuado —- ANSWER Hi, From my experience I can say that the said MT 999 is fake based on the following reasons: 1/ There is no way that the Sender has sent Swift MT 999 but the recipient has not received it, especially when the sender and the receiver are branches of the same bank, i.e., Deutsche Bank 2/ MT999 is an unauthenticated message. It is said that MT999 is like an email sent through the Swift message system and it has no value whatsoever. 3/ The content in MT 999 is very commonly used by scammers. Ask your bank (Deutsche Bank Mumbai) to contact Deutsche Bank Frankfurt to verify whether Deutsche Bank Frankfurt sent that MT 999, then you will know if it is fake. While waiting for clarification, please do not respond to suspected scammers, especially do not pay any fees as requested by them. Good luck. Keep me informed of the case. Good luck! Mr. Old Man —- From Gabriel Espinosa Dear Mr. Old Man, Thank you very much for your kind reply. Your information has been really helpful, the MT 999 never arrived after all and the client was scammed for $100k, so he is suing the company but you know how this is. Another very important tip I found out, to determine the swift was fake is that the TRN must have 4 letters, and this one had only two, I got a banker friend who was trying to track the swift and she couldn’t, so she picked up on that information. I reviewed other real MT 799 swifts and they had the 4 letters like she said. Let´s keep in touch, have a great day and thank you very much for your kind support. — Saludos, Gabriel Espinosa
