Want Stability? Build Your Own Home

Today, Facebook reminded me of something that happened 17 years ago. A reader asked where Mr. Old Man was “moving” to.

Well, the house in question wasn’t a real one. It was an online home.

About 20 years ago, when Yahoo 360 was launched, Mr. Old Man enthusiastically built a little corner on the Internet to share articles and Q&As on international trade finance. To my surprise, quite a few people stopped by, and many of them have remained friends to this day.

Then one fine day, Yahoo decided to call it quits. Bloggers began a great migration. Mr. Old Man spent a few months in Yahoo 360 Plus — a sort of temporary resettlement area for Yahoo 360 refugees . Before long, I moved again, this time to My Opera, and later through several other platforms.

After so many relocations, quite a few articles and a large amount of data were lost along the way.

Fortunately, my most recent move to WordPress turned out to be much more stable. But since it was essentially a free place to stay, there were still limitations, especially when it came to welcoming visitors.

Living in that kind of “public housing” on the Internet always left me a little uneasy. Who knew when the landlord might decide it was time to move out?

So I finally decided to build a home of my own:

And it has now been standing for more than a decade.

Of course, owning a home means paying annual “property taxes” — domain registration and hosting fees. But I usually renew several years in advance, so the doors remain wide open to visitors from Vietnam and around the world.

People often say that stability comes from having a place to call home. For me, having my own small home on the Internet brings much the same peace of mind.

Mr. Old Man always welcomes visitors.

If there is no chicken, there will be duck. If there is no duck, there will be tea and coffee instead.

More importantly, everyone is welcome and treated with equal hospitality, regardless of status, nationality, or background.

Welcome to www.mroldman.net.

Questions, comments, stories, memories… all are welcome.
